SDG INVESTMENTS Monthly Newsletter - July 2021

Dear ,

Welcome to the latest edition of our monthly newsletter. In this edition, we would like to present you
SDG 9 – Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, our SDG of the month. Over the last three years, we have realized several projects contributing to SDG 9. You will find a brief overview below.

In this month’s newsletter we will also pay special attention to SMEs and their role in achieving SDG 9. If you are further interested to read about how sustainable SMEs and their business models are vital to achieving the SGDs, while presenting attractive investment opportunities, we highly recommend our recent article by Stefan and Jonathan.

We hope you enjoy reading the July edition of our newsletter and do look forward to hearing from you.
Frank, Lars, Stefan and the whole team at SDG INVESTMENTS.

SDG OF THE MONTH
SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure
A well-developed infrastructure is the foundation for people and companies to build prospering communities. It includes streets and railroads, but also a reliable supply of clean energy, internet, water and public transportation.

This is a wide range of sectors, but in cooperation with our clients, we were able to work on most of these topics and make a difference. Please find the selection of our projects contributing to SDG 9, below.

FIGURE OF THE MONTH

SMEs are a key driver for innovation. They are a backbone of the economy in most countries. SMEs provide more than 2/3 of all jobs worldwide and account for the majority of new job creation. (Source: ILO) However, according to the most recent SDG progress report by the UN, only

34,7%

of small companies in developing countries have access to loans or other forms of debt capital, hampering growth and development.

Sustainable investment experts from the University of Zurich show, that investors can create impact by providing capital to impactful firms that cannot easily find sufficient funding. This is especially true where financial markets are inefficient: for smaller, young firms and for firms in developing countries. Such investments are not easy to find and can be risky. But this is the point: if a company already has easy access to efficient capital markets, an additional supply of capital will hardly affect its growth. The investor does not make a big difference.

This is exactly where SDG INVESTMENTS is perfectly positioned. On the one hand we help institutional investors to identify impactful investments with an attractive risk-return profile. On the other hand, we provide impactful growth companies tailor-made financing solutions and access to new capital providers.

This is how we supported one of our first clients Africa GreenTec. By structuring a secured bond and successfully placing it with professional investors, we enabled Africa GreenTec to install several Solartainer® in rural areas of Mali to provide people an access to electricity. This is real impact on SDG 9: Access to finance helped a young, growing company to scale the outreach of its innovative product to provide infrastructure services to an underserved population.

SDG INVESTMENTS IN THE NEWS

In a recent article in the AnleihenFinder, our colleagues Dr. Stefan Bund and Jonathan Meyer examine the opportunities and challenges in the market for sustainable investments in the German “Mittelstand”. In particular, they focus on the great potential of SMEs to make diverse contributions to achieving the SDGs, but also on the opportunities to generate attractive returns.

My favorite movie quote...
... "I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship." (Humphrey Bogart in Casablanca)

If I am not at my desk, I am...
... "out teaching children or university students, or working as a vaccination volunteer in London."

Prior to SDG INVESTMENTS®...
... "I was a board member at Scope Ratings, a new credit rating agency, which has developed into the largest European player over the last six years."
